Weekly group sessions on self-kindness cut putting off schoolwork in high-school girls

Who it’s about: Students

A teenage girl sits cross-legged on a cushion, places her hands on her heart, then lifts a book open to read.
  1. Helped

Girls who had eight weekly group sessions on self-kindness put off schoolwork less than girls without training.

Small randomised trial of 60 high-school girls in Tehran, Iran · vs girls who got no training · they rated themselves

The study

Who took part

60 girls in grades 10 to 12 at high schools in Tehran, Iran, split by lottery into two groups of 30. They weren't chosen for putting things off.

What they did

One group had 8 weekly group sessions of 90 minutes on being kind to themselves, over about two months. They practised kind imagery and wrote kind letters to themselves. The other group got no training.

What happened

At the end, the training group rated themselves as putting off schoolwork less than the other group. The table numbers were partly garbled when read, so we don't give sizes. Nobody was checked again later.
