Teens put things off less after group therapy, but nobody compared groups

Who it’s about: Children

A curly-haired teen in a checked hoodie rows a small wooden boat, pulling and lifting the oars in a steady rhythm.
  1. No comparison

After eight weekly group sessions on unhelpful thoughts, teens put things off less, but no other group was checked.

Small randomised trial of 60 teens of mothers in addiction recovery · no comparison group · they rated themselves · ⚠ summary claims more than the results show; numbers unreliable; groups weren't properly compared

The study

Who took part

Teenagers whose mothers were recovering from drug or alcohol problems, from two rehab centres in Sari, Iran. The summary says 60 teens aged 15 to 18, but the main text says 41 teens aged 12 to 18.

What they did

One group had 8 weekly group sessions of 90 minutes. They learned to spot and challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, talk to themselves more kindly, solve problems and talk with others. The other group only filled in the questionnaires.

What happened

The summary says teens put things off less after the sessions. But the main text says only the therapy group was analysed, so there is no real comparison with the other group. Parts of the text are garbled and the numbers don't add up, so we can't give sizes.
