The study
Who took part
30 high-school girls in Mashhad, Iran, with 15 in each group. They were chosen because they put off schoolwork a lot and found it hard to manage their own learning.
What they did
One group had ten 90-minute group sessions of schema therapy, twice a week. Schema therapy looks at deep-rooted beliefs about yourself, tests them, and practises new ways of acting through imagining, role-play and homework. The other group got nothing.
What happened
At the end, the therapy group rated themselves as putting off test preparation, homework and term papers less than the other group. This mostly held at a check up to one month later. The size of the difference looked implausibly large.
