Group sessions on making better choices helped high-school boys put off schoolwork less

Who it’s about: Students, Children

A teenage boy in a checked shirt and striped trousers walks in place on a wooden block, hugging a stack of books.
  1. Helped

Boys who had eight group talks on choices and plans put off exam study and homework less than others.

Very small randomised trial of 24 high-school boys in Iran · vs boys who got no counselling · they rated themselves · ⚠ numbers unreliable

The study

Who took part

24 boys in their first year of high school at one school in Zaveh County, Iran. The paper doesn't say how many were in each group.

What they did

One group had eight group sessions with a counsellor, each 1.5 hours long. They covered basic needs, taking responsibility for choices, swapping poor choices for better ones, making plans and sticking to them. The other group got nothing.

What happened

At the end, the counselling group rated themselves as putting off studying for exams and doing assignments less than the other group. The paper's main results table has errors, so we can't be sure how strong the difference was. There was no later check.
