Group talks about mixed feelings on exercise gave inactive women more inner drive

HelpedThe short version

Four group talks about mixed feelings on exercise gave women more drive of their own than plain health advice did.

Three women sit cross-legged on a round carpet while the middle one talks, open hands tipping like scales, a teapot beside them.

The study

  1. Who took part

70 married women aged 15 to 49 who were not very active, from four health centres in one town in Iran. About 30 in each group were left at the end.

  2. What they did

Health centres, not single women, were put into groups. Women at two centres went to four 90-minute group talks, with 10 to 12 women in each. The talks were about their mixed feelings on exercise and making their own choices. Women at the other two centres got general health advice only. Both groups got a public talk on exercise and a leaflet.

  3. What happened

Four months later, the paper says the talk group wanted to exercise more for its own sake. They also felt more in control and more able. The paper prints no numbers because its results tables are missing. Feeling close to others and wanting to exercise for looks didn't clearly differ, and the paper contradicts itself on some results.
