Group lessons on how to study and plan helped girls put things off less

Who it’s about: Students

A teenage girl in a checked sweater sits on a mat turning the pages of a large open book, her phone face down beside her.
  1. Helped

After ten lessons on studying and planning, girls put off schoolwork less than the waiting group, even a month later.

Small randomised trial of 30 Iranian high-school girls who overuse social media · vs girls still waiting for the lessons · they rated themselves

The study

Who took part

30 girls aged 15 to 18, about 16 on average, at high schools in Dezful, Iran. All scored high on a questionnaire about phone and social media overuse, and there were 15 in each group.

What they did

One group had ten weekly 60-minute group lessons. They learned ways to remember and sort out what they study. Then they learned to set study goals, plan their time, check their own progress and change how they study when needed. The other group waited and got the lessons after the study ended.

What happened

The girls who had the lessons rated themselves as putting off schoolwork much less than the waiting group at the end. The gap was still there one month later.
