One ADHD workshop for families may raise knowledge but not reduce stigma

No comparisonThe short version

After the workshop, parents and teens said they knew more about ADHD than before.

The study

  1. Who took part

15 teens aged 13 to 17 with an ADHD diagnosis took part, with 20 parents or carers. Most teens had many inattention symptoms, and just over half were taking ADHD medicine.

  2. What they did

Everyone came to one three-hour workshop. It had three parts: a group talk on ADHD, peer groups that set goals, and a family session to plan.

  3. What happened

Teens and parents rated their knowledge of ADHD higher at the end, but stigma did not change. Parents became more willing to accept medicine and less willing to try special diets or brain games. Teens' plans to start or restart treatment rose a little, not clearly, and there was no comparison group.
