The study
Who took part
131 medical students in St Petersburg, Russia. They were 19 to 20 years old. 50 were men and 81 were women.
What they did
Students were told that the brain and bowel follow a regular daily rhythm. The paper doesn't say what they were told, how, or for how long. Students who went to the toilet only 3 to 4 times a week filled in the questionnaire again a month later.
What happened
A month later, students who had gone 3 to 4 times a week filled it in again. About half of them said they now aimed for the morning. About half also went up to 5 to 6 times a week. The paper doesn't say how many were in this group or test the change. There was no other group to compare with, and the paper's numbers don't fully add up.
