Large randomised trial of 2,463 members of a gym in Sweden · vs members who got no emails · behaviour was recorded

The study

Who took part

2,463 members of a non-profit gym in Gothenburg, Sweden, about 30 years old on average. A bit over half were men and about half were students.

What they did

Half the members got a short, general weekly email from the gym for 12 weeks; the other half got no emails. The gym's card scanner counted every visit.

What happened

Over the 12 weeks, members who got the emails made about 13% more gym visits than those who got none. In the three months after the emails stopped, visits were still about 12% higher, but this later result was less certain. About the same share of each group renewed their yearly membership.
