The study
Who took part
1,158 students in the classes of 19 PE teachers in Seoul, South Korea. Most were in middle school, and about half were girls.
What they did
Trained teachers went to three sessions in the spring term. They had a 3-hour workshop, then a 2-hour session six weeks later and a group discussion six weeks after that. The other teachers got the training after the study ended.
What happened
Students of trained teachers kept their motivation steady, while students of the other teachers lost some. Their engagement grew more, and their expected grades and plans to stay active rose only in the trained group. The two groups already differed on future plans at the start.
